The worse thing than childhood asthma is asthma in toddlers. Most children who have asthma developed the disease while they were still toddlers. With a reported 5 million American children suffering from asthma, 173 thousand of them hospitalized for severe symptoms and 864 thousand receiving emergency treatment annually, it is important that your toddler be evaluated for asthma as early as possible.

Since it is more difficult to diagnose asthma among infants and toddlers, it would be best to look for signs or symptoms that characterize the disease. Many cases of asthma deaths were due to the parents’ failure to recognize the severity of the toddler’s condition. Common colds and respiratory diseases such as bronchitis can exhibit asthma-like symptoms. But this does not mean you should ignore your child especially when he has difficulty in breathing or a wheezing cough.

When your toddler is diagnosed with asthma, it does not mean he will be forever afflicted with the disease. On the contrary, there are lots of documented cases where the toddler’s asthma no longer persisted into adulthood. It can also be deduced from this observation that toddlers are more susceptible to asthma triggers but develops immunity as they grow older.

A toddler with asthma will have persistent cough that is hacking and congested. Sometimes the toddler may have wheezing cough and sometimes have none. In addition to this symptom, your toddler will display muscle retractions and flaring nostrils. He would also experience difficulty in breathing making feedings impossible. You will also observe your toddler rapidly breathing even while he sleeps. If you think, your toddler is breathing too rapidly, you should take him to the nearest hospital.

Another sign you should watch out for is your toddler’s lack of stamina and enthusiasm during playtime. This may be because he is associating physical activities with breathing difficulties and naturally gets discouraged to join other children. Having him checked by your pediatrician can determine if your toddler has asthma.

Asthma in toddlers may be more difficult to manage. The best way to do this is to enlist the help of your care provider or his teachers. You can prepare some detailed instructions so they would know what to do in case of an asthma episode. Your toddler’s pediatrician can help you prepare this set of instructions.

You should never take your toddler to a smoky place since cigarette smoke can easily trigger an asthma attack. Your pediatrician can test your child’s sensitivity to dust mite protein. Sometimes, parents overlook the fact that stuffed toys are hosts to these dust mites. During falls and spring seasons when levels of pollen are high, you should limit your toddler’s outdoor activities.

Emotional stress is also considered to be a trigger factor. Not only does it cause an asthma attack but it could also worsen asthma symptoms. Anxiety or panic attacks should be dealt with reasonable calm to help relax your child. The moment your toddler calms down you can administer treatment such as bronchodilator medication.

Keep your children safe and protect them from elements that can lead to long-term damage. These kinds of problems can haunt them through adulthood, so take caution when it comes to your young loved ones.

We know that hospitals are geared for caring for its patients. To make sure that everyone gets the level of treatment that is necessary for them, you will find that there are hospitals that provide for generally everyone and every medical problem. Then there are also ones that are configured for certain types of patients. Like hospitals all over, Boston hospitals have their share of hospitals like this too. So, understanding the different medical care hospitals provide will be valuable information. If you are ever in need of some hospital care.
As you look through a directory of hospitals that are located in and throughout the Boston area you will get to see the range of Boston hospitals and the services that they provide. For example there are children’s hospitals where treatment for patients begins at birth and in some cases before birth. They specialize in the care for children of all ages. This is probably not the hospital for you if you are a 42 year old male that is having chest pain.
At Children’s Hospital, this level of care for children will be continued until they have reached their 21st year. Since this is the age when adulthood is said to occur, the children’s infirmary can’t continue giving treatment. They will nevertheless be able to inform you of a substitute hospital that you can check into. You can be certain that their recommendation of hospitals is an unbiased recommendation. They may recommend a hospital that is close to your residents or one that specializes in your type of care.
There are various Boston hospitals that deal with the dissimilar problems that women go through. There are facilities that can deal with infertility issues, prenatal care and pregnant mothers and their newborns. These first-class facilities help a new mother through the first few difficult months of her baby’s life. Although these hospitals may see other patients, it’s primary concern or should I say specialty, is in pregnancy, infertility and prenatal care for women.
Another thing to remember is these types of Boston hospitals are amply equipped and staffed with medical and nursing staff who understands the different needs that women require. Typically, they have had special training above and beyond their standard nursing credentials. This is just another good reason to know what hospitals specialize in, so that you can get the proper care that you might need.
There are also other types of hospitals in Boston that are configured for dealing with certain types of diseases. You will be able to find many Boston hospitals that are able to deal with various conditions such as cancer, like the Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center. In this infirmary you will find that the faculty can help you through this difficult period of time in your life. They are staffed with nurses, counselors and other medical staff who understand the needs of this particular patient. With this understanding they can provide a higher level of service to you as the patient.
Unlike the other Boston hospitals the Beth Israel Cancer Center has a individualized approach to dealing with their various cancer patients. This hospital can help you make the assorted decisions that you will need to face during the initial period of uncovering your disease. They give you the tools to make it easier to deal with. You will be able to talk with the doctors and nursing staff about the versatile treatments that you will be undergoing. They will be able to give you feedback based on their experience and knowledge about your particular problem.
As with all Boston hospitals the level of care that is provided for patients is wonderful. That is the beauty of understanding what different hospitals specialize in. You will be able to find a range of services that deal with just about every facet of patient care. So the next time that you need some medical help while you are in Boston, you should check out the various Boston hospitals and see the assorted services you will be provided with. And know that it is in your best interest to know what hospitals provide what services. This will arm you with piece of mind. Knowing you are getting the best possible care available because they understand your needs.

September 2008

The Danish businessman and entrepreneur Bjorn Stiedl, who now mainly lives in Paris, has initiated a new charitable organisation, Foundation Ours en Peluche, (“the Teddy Bear Trust”) to raise funding for a more comforting environment when young children are submitted to hospital.

It is the aim to raise enough funding to secure that all children will be receiving a teddy bear when submitted to a Parisian hospital.

Being admitted to a hospital is often a scaring and intimidating experience, especially for a child. Although parents and staff alike do their best to alleviate the children’s anxieties as well as their ailments, they can’t be around them 24/7. And it is often during the small hours of the morning that the children feel most scared and insecure.

Studies have shown that teddy bears have a positive effect on children who are admitted to a hospital. The teddy bear gives the children something safe and secure, and also a “companion” who can support and comfort them on their own level. Furthermore, health workers can explain the child’s illness through the teddy bear. This also alleviated the children’s anxieties.

Therefore giving the children a teddy bear when they are admitted to the hospital for long-term treatment is a very simple and humane way to improve the children’s experience when being in the hospital.

It is Mr. Stiedl’s hope that all formalities can be finalised by January 2009 so that negotiations for delivery of teddy bears with individual hospitals in Paris can commence.

“Hospitals are big and bureaucratic organisations, and implementing new routines and procedures take time”, Mr. Stiedl says “Issues regarding safety and health such as fire proofing, hygiene, etc. is of course also issues that has to be dealt with”

Bjorn Stiedl continues; “When we have an overview of the level of interest among the various clinics and hospitals, and when we approximately know how many teddy bears we have to hand out on a yearly basis, we will commence the fundraising.”

Bjorn Stiedl has already developed a model for the funding. “I will arrange for successful restaurants to add 1 Euro per bill they hand out during lunch and dinner service. It is entirely voluntary for the restaurant guest if he wants to pay the 1 Euro teddy bear donation. If the restaurant guest doesn’t want to pay, fair enough, 1 Euro will immediately be deducted from the bill, but I’m convinced that this will be a very small minority”.

As soon as all formalities are in place, staff will be engaged to engage participating Parisian restaurants.

The waiting and anticipation of the birth of a baby is an exciting time. The nine months it takes to create something so beautiful is worth the wait. It is worth the false alarms of Braxton-Hicks contractions. True labor contractions and needles from the IV are not fun but the baby is all worth it. The nurses coming in to look and poke at everything that was once private will not last long. The pushing out of a six to nine pound something with all the strength God gave is hard but after it is done the baby has arrived. After the baby’s birth there may still be some discomfort as the mom’s body adjusts back to normal. The baby has to go through some clean-up and tests. There is really no rest for mother or baby in the hospital. If it is a person’s first baby the nurses give information about how to change and feed the baby. Then in a couple of days or even less it is time to go home and start the adventure.

The nurses do not tell everything in the hospital. They tell the parents the basics of how the mom should take care of herself and get as much rest as possible. They do not tell about the baby crying and the parents trying everything to make the baby happy but nothing appearing to work, especially in the middle of the night when mom and dad are tired. If the mom has not returned to work but the dad has to get up early to provide for the family, the mom might want to consider staying up with the baby. The mom can sleep the next day whenever the baby sleeps. It seems easier said than done, especially if the mom is sensitive to light and the bright sun is telling her it is not time to sleep. The mom can try to keep the baby up in the daytime by letting in a lot of sunlight. Also making a lot of noise around the house to keep the baby from going into a deep sleep may work. The baby can take naps in the infant seat instead of laying down snug as a bug. It may be difficult the first several weeks to get the baby to get on a consistent schedule but it will change.

Doing other activities around the house like cleaning may seem nonexistent at this point. It is important for the parents of the new baby not to get overwhelmed with taking care of the baby and cleaning the house. The house should not be nasty but if it is a little out of order it is not the end of the world. The parents should focus on taking care of the mom and baby. Also if the baby has older brothers and sisters then that can be plenty to do. The older siblings have to adjust to the parents having a great deal of attention on the baby. The parents have to keep in mind that the older siblings have to get used to the new baby as well. They may want to pitch in and help by going to get a diaper or a blanket. Depending on the other kids’ ages they can help with chores around the house as well.

Bringing home the baby is an awesome time in a family’s life. It is not all about not getting sleep or getting anything done. It is a time to be joyful and thankful for the new addition to the family. Even through the seemingly stressful times the family still has to find peace and happiness. The family has to remember that the baby will not be a newborn forever and they will soon be wondering “where did time go” when the child starts to walk and talk.

Fun holidays, beaches, the ocean, retirement and off course plastic surgery, that’s what comes into mind when many of us think about Florida, “The Sunshine State”. With all the vacationers, travelers, and retirees in Florida, there is always someone sick somewhere, or someone suffering from food poising from all the different foods eaten, motion sickness, as well as sea sickness from the boat rides, not forgetting sunburn, heatstroke and more.

These kind of problems and illnesses can all be treated with medication that has been purchased over the counter in grocery or drug stores. On the other hand there are those serious illnesses that will need the patient admitted to a hospital.

The state of Florida has many hospitals that offer medical services to people with different needs. People searching for an option from a list of the many Florida hospitals can get the information that they need from different sources including but not limited to the internet, hospital directories, and phone books.

Many Hospitals in Florida are private care hospitals. These hospitals will in many cases cater to the people who are well off, and the elite. There are also some Florida Hospitals that are affiliated to some religious groups. This does not mean that they turn away those who do not share their beliefs. Their doors are open to people from all walks of life. These are especially important for the large immigrant community that is found in the state of Florida. They also provide service without question to those who have found their way into the country illegally.

Some of these Hospitals are part of the National Health Care program that ensures healthcare is provided and available to all irrespective of their backgrounds. Florida hospitals boast some of the best medical technology available. This is because the hospitals are constantly undergoing upgrades, new techniques are being taught, and the technology is constantly updated.

Many websites are created everyday on the internet to make life easier and a little more convenient for us. Hospitals USA is just one of those websites. Hospital USA is exactly what you think it is. It’s a website that is dedicated to hospitals in the United States. It will help you locate a hospital in any state. It’s important because it helps the individual find a hospital that will provide according to their needs. Basically it is a form of an online directory for hospitals in the United States.

Most people who have used the website will find that the levels of confusion are reduced when they log on to this site. This is because you can use various specifics to narrow down your search to point at whatever you are looking for. You can also find services that are offered in your state that you would have otherwise looked for elsewhere.

When using Hospitals USA, you can find hospitals that specialize in different types of medicine. For example someone looking for a hospital specializing in pediatric oncology might be fortunate to find one in their home state, maybe just a few towns away. I advise people to open up the Hospitals website. It opens up a world of information that is at your fingertips. The amazing thing is that most people don’t know this information is so readily available. Browsing this site leads you to links of hospital sites that you can browse.

Hospitals USA helps you know what options are open to you. For example a newly expectant mother might want a hospital in her area that offers something like underwater birthing. She can probably find this kind of facility by initiating a search on the website. Knowledge is power; people need to spread the word about Hospitals USA. This is a toll that should be utilized by anyone with access to a computer and an internet connection.
